Victory for Casino Workers

It’s the old tale of companies putting profit before people…and in this case, the people saw some justice. The workers at the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City had a victory this week when the NJ commission that oversees casino licenses denied the owners a new license.

From USA Today:

Immediately after taking control from Aztar on Jan. 3, Columbia Sussex [owners of Tropicana] began slashing payroll, eliminating cocktail servers, security guards, hotel room cleaners, even locksmiths. Its largest union howled in protest, and said the cuts left the Tropicana understaffed and filthy — concerns echoed by Tropicana patrons.

"Staffing was slashed in pursuit of profit," Kassekert said. "Cleanliness was disregarded in order to meet a predetermined bottom line. Customer service was dismissed.

"Simply put, I do not believe this applicant has the business ability to operate a facility of this size and magnitude given the decisions that were made."

And

"This in no way interrupts casino operations," said commission Chairwoman Linda Kassekert. "The casino and hotel remain open. The employees will be on the job and will be paid, and customers will be able to gamble and enjoy all the amenities that the Tropicana has to offer."

The workers, represented by Unite Here Local 54, saw over 900 jobs cut when the new owners took over – just unbelievable, really shows how greedy these guys were. A nice victory…
