If you believed the media spin, well, it was just about time that those auto workers gave up their generous health care benefits provided by General Motors.

What? The real issue that should have been thrust on to the front pages is: why don’t we have a universal health care system in this country? The answer: the free market and dumb ideology. I wrote about this months back in a TomPaine.com column, arguing that universal health care is a moral and economic competitive issue.

And, with the sad scenario playing out at General Motors, I now return to the issue in a new TomPaine column, “Diagnosis for America.”
