Airline Justice

Nah, I’m not talking about cheaper tickets or seats that are actually comfortable. Something more consequential, if you want to take the broader good view: fingers crossed but looks like a few thousands NYC-area airport workers will be unionized.

I knew this was in the works but lost track of the actual vote date so, Via The Wall Street Journal (subscription)

Several thousand workers at the New York City area’s three largest airports plan to take a significant step toward joining a union after more than three years of demonstrations calling for higher wages and benefits.

The workers are employed by contractors of four large airlines to work as security guards, wheelchair attendants, baggage handlers and cleaners of bathrooms and aircraft at La Guardia Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.

Cards signed by workers indicating their commitment to join the union are expected to be counted Monday at Riverside Church in Manhattan, initiating a process that could lead to a formal vote to unionize. Former Mayor David Dinkins will help oversee the counting of the cards at Monday’s event, along with Riverside Church pastor the Rev. James Forbes and former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer.

Here’s hoping.
