Just cruised in here to St. Louis (uneventfully, I might add, to my surprise…) and the Hotel Grand Renaissance is abuzz with people checking in. Will start nosing around. The first official event is a rally tonight at the convention center across the street.
BUT–in the meantime, you might have thought I had forgotten but I didn’t: last month, I posted an article I wrote about the future of labor post-AFL-CIO convention and asked people to give their own ideas. I saved those and have meant to post them but…well, other things intervened. I thought, on the eve of the creation of the new labor federation, it would be appropriate to post the comments back to people to see where everyone stands today, in the wake of additional disaffiliations, efforts at trying to patch things up (the CWA-Teamster airline deal and the SEIU-AFSCME kiss-and-makeup) and the Northwest/Boeing strikes.
I grouped comments together in several categories–you may not see your particular comment if it was already contained in someone else’s point. And I’ve posted these without names–mainly so that I don’t get complaints about “you didn’t post mine.”
What do people think now, in light of the discussion last month?
