As most people have heard, there is a Senate deal on immigration, cut between a bi-partisan liberal/conservative group that includes Ted Kennedy and Jon Kyl, among others. Personally, I detest the “Build the wall” portion and the requirement that for people to become citizens, they first have to leave the country and return.

    Here’s my big issue: very little, if any, discussion included the point that our own economic policies create a wave of economic refugees. Why do you think people leave Mexico and other countries–leave their families and loved ones and communities? Could NAFTA and NAFTA-like trade agreements have something to do with the flood? Yup.

    So, maybe if we stopped impoverishing people they wouldn’t have the need to leave their homes. You think?
