McGwire Refuses to Pull a Kazan

Well, baseball is on my mind today, as I pack up to journey south for spring training (which may put a crimp in my minds attention to the blog Beast). I don’t know whether Mark Mcwire did the juice but at least he did the stand up thing, refusing to pull an Elia Kazan and name names. Kazan, for those who wonder, fingered a number of people during the 1950s Red Scare investigations lead by Sen. Joseph McCarthy. Kazan ruined lives by informing on friends and colleagues. Canseco obviously had no hesitation to fry others. I’m not going to defend steroid use but it does feel like the hysteria whipped up here is aimed at chopping down a few visible examples—after all, the owners don’t care what’s happening in the clubhouse as long as the turnstiles keep clicking and the dollars keep adding up. And the Players Union has definitely done a woeful job of figuring out how to position itself.
