Organzing Gets Easier? Maybe, Maybe Not

No one should be against fairer election rules–well, no one outside the corporate, wing-nut world. But, we should take the new proposed NLRB rules with a grain of salt:

The proposed amendments are intended to reduce unnecessary litigation, streamline pre- and post-election procedures, and facilitate the use of electronic communications and document filing.

The proposed amendments are designed to fix flaws in the Board’s current procedures that build in unnecessary delays, allow wasteful litigation, and fail to take advantage of modern communication technologies.

Ok, this is all great–check out the side-by-side comparison of the old way and the proposed new regulations.

   BUT…

It is more a comment, in my view, how hard it is to organize under the labor laws that such a big deal is being made over what are really modest changes. No one is against streamlining–and I’m sure the Chamber of Commerce is going to throw a hissy fit about the proposed changes.

But, if you do the math of the numbers needed to grow to represent even another one percent–hundreds of thousands of new members–these changes aren’t going to even get us to first base.
