Put The Brakes on Bad Peru Deal

Sorry for the late post (I know, you can’t start the day without reading here…) but I’ve been on the Writers Guild of America’s picket line all morning (out at Silvercup Studios in Queens…a little rain, a little wind). Things are still strong on the line and I’ll update this more as the strike continues (please consider walking the line). But, I got back to a reminder from my friends at the Citizens Trade Campaign that the so-called "free trade" deal with Peru is coming up for a vote tomorrow in the House. So, get out your phones and call the Capitol at 202-225-3121 and ask to speak to your member of Congress. Here are CTC’s helpful talking points:

The Peru Free Trade Agreement replicates many of the problems in NAFTA and CAFTA (see CTC Statement). Some of these problems include: investment rules that promote the off-shoring of US jobs; forbidding local, state and federal government from favoring local or US businesses in their procurement policies; and mandating the importation of food that does not meet our safety standards.

Some Members of Congress are operating under the mistaken impression that Labor supports the Peru deal, but it’s not true. While some unions have chosen not to actively oppose the Peru FTA, there is not ONE that supports it. Likewise, not one civil rights organization supports this agreement.

Remind your Member of Congress that this is likely to be the only free trade agreement vote this year. They may not have the opportunity to win back fair trade points by opposing the Panama, Colombia or South Korea FTAs

Here’s a little more background on the deal.
