So, less than a week out from the showdown, it may not be a showdown after all–at least where the politics are concerned. I hear that John Wilhelm, the president of UNITE-HERE, who was mentioned as a likely challenger to John Sweeney, isn’t going to throw his hat in the ring to challenge—at least not at the Vegas meeting. Though Sweeney is certainly putting on a p.r. show—he’s holding a press conference in Washington this Thursday and, then, another one on Monday in Vegas before the meeting starts.
Curious agenda out from 16th Street—curious at least if you’re on the side of debating change. The whole first day is devoted to reports on political, legislative and organizing campaigns. Having been inside one of those sessions, my own take is that there is very little debate and certainly very little disagreement. The debate about the future of labor is left to the morning of the second day—giving another day for twisting arms and persuading people in the bars of the Bally’s Hotel where this whole affair is taking place.
Curiously, the future of labor discussion is entitled “restructuring proposals.” I do believe there is a need to change some of the structures.
But, this is far from the most important issue facing labor. Like, what’s the overall strategic vision? If this discussion just focuses on rebates and mergers, it’s a waste of time.
