Reuters reported just a few hours ago that the House will now take up the so-called "free trade" deal with Peru on Thursday:
Leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives have decided to delay a vote on a free-trade agreement with Peru until Thursday, House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer said.
Hoyer made the announcement on the House floor on Wednesday after lawmakers approved a procedural motion to begin debate on the bill. Hoyer said the Democratic-led House would conduct most of the debate on Wednesday evening but finish it on Thursday morning and then vote on the trade agreement.
So, there is still time to call you Member of Congress and urge a "no" vote on this deal. Don’t be taken in by the rhetoric that this agreement is better because it includes labor and environmental provisions. The problem with all so-called "free trade" deals is that they structure trade in favor of corporations, protecting investors rights over citizens’ rights. Check out the points to make and more background in my post from the other day.
I’ll be at the picket line again today for our sisters and brothers from the Writers Guild of America–taking the afternoon shift today because we’ve got a humdinger of a forum today that we are sponsoring on the topic of the unregulated economy in New York City (though the basic trends are familiar to all cities around the country). We will have video of the forum posted here asap.
