The Iraq War Resolution–No Withdrawal

Just a few minutes ago, the Executive Council passed a resolution about the Iraq War. It does not call on the U.S. to withdraw from Iraq. As I discussed recently, there is a fair amount of pressure coming from various local unions and state labor bodies that the AFL-CIO convention should pass a strong anti-war resolution that includes a demand to withdraw the troops from Iraq.

The resolution does make strong statements about the lies Americans were told about the war (okay, the word “lie” is not there but these folks are diplomatic) and focuses on the need for real labor rights in Iraq. And, thank god, that it also mentions the thousands of Iraqi casualties from the war

But, the failure to call for a complete withdrawal will cause a fair amount of discontent–and perhaps a very vigorous debate in the Resolutions Committee which is set to meet this afternoon. And just my chance, into my email dropped a resolution adopted by the King County (Seattle) Labor Council just this past Wednesday which calls for an immediate end to the occupation.

When I have an e-copy of the Executive Council’s resolution, I’ll post the entire resolution (sorry, too long to type and a lot is happening…see posts coming in a couple of hours).

UPDATE: I now have here a full copy of the above resolution–but it don’t look all nice and pretty.
