Several people have commented in unrelated posts about the series that has been running this week in the Los Angeles Times about the United Farm Workers (registration required). I frankly haven’t had the time this week to read each piece…but people have asked for a space to debate the issue. So, here you go.
The series ends today with a piece about Eliseo Medina, a former UFW organizer who is now an executive vice-president of SEIU–and, from my limited personal interaction but understanding from others, I agree that Eliseo is the darn good labor leader he is portrayed to be. Quickly scanning the series, I gather the upshot is this: the UFW has failed to organize new workers and the UFW and legacy of Cesar Chavez are now being used to raise millions of dollars to support non-organizing efforts.
So, discuss.
