Thursday MishMash

Here are a few things that caught my eye.

#1: Good riddance, Tom Tancredo–but do the Democrats understand the political implications of immigration in 2008? So, Tancredo, the odious member of Congress, is apparently dropping out of the presidential race, having registered barely a blip in the pretty weird and crazy Republican field. Some would say that, whew, that shows that immigration–Tancredo’s signature issue–just doesn’t play among voters…or at least the way Tancredo, a real immigrant basher, wanted it to play.

I beg to differ. When we held an immigration forum recently (see the video here on the electoral implications of the immigration debate), virtually all the very smart panelists thought we would "win" the immigration debate and that the public was on the side of sane, rationale, humane immigration legislation. I think that is a mistake. I’m convinced Republican strategists are already cooking up the scripts for television ads that will make immigrants the 2008 Willie Hortons. I hope I’m wrong.

#2: Congressional Democrats aren’t so bad for business. Or so argues this article–and I’m not surprised.

#3: The countdown continues for a possible strike on December 31st of thousands of building services workers in the Northwest. Today, there is a rally in downtown Manhattan to support the workers. As the union, SEIU’s 32BJ says, "As working communities struggle to make ends meet, CEOs are receiving billions in bonuses. On December 20th members of Local 32BJ together with brothers and sisters from other unions and community organizations will rally to demand that workers get their fair share." It’s at 2:30 at Bowling Green Park (just Google it…).
