Transit Workers in NY–Wrap Up

What a day it was for Local 100 of the Transport Workers Union. First, Roger Toussaint, the president of the union who lead the local out on strike last December, was re-elected after a very bitter campaign. Toussaint apparently received under 50 percent but because he was running against four other opponents, he easily won since the others split up the anti-incumbent vote.

Second, the arbitrator in the long-simmering contract battle issued a binding decision, giving the workers virtually the same deal that had been negotiated with the transit authority back in January–which the membership initially rejected by a tiny seven vote margin but, then, overwhelmingly approved the deal when it was taken to a vote the second time in April. Problem was that the intransigent transit authority refused to recognize the second vote. Dopes.
