About AIG and Bonuses

Look, I think it’s outrageous that these AIG guys are raking in huge bonuses. But, I thought that a year ago and ten years ago–as I’m sure a lot of you did. So, I’m a bit less impressed by the outrage expressed from the White House all the way down the food chain.

So, let me get this straight–over the past 30 years, when workers wages were flat compared to productivity, and these same CEOs, or their predecessors, walked away with huge pay and benefits, that wasn’t outrageous? Where was the now president complaining about that? Or for that matter Larry Summers and the rest of the crew?

Part of the argument seems to be:

"This is a corporation that finds itself in financial distress due to recklessness and greed," Mr. Obama said Monday, his voice rising in anger. "Under these circumstances, it’s hard to understand how derivative traders at AIG warranted any bonuses, much less $165 million in extra pay."

And the greed that existed previously didn’t qualify? In other words, it was okay if a company was making money and these CEOs were pocketed millions–money that wasn’t, then, there for regular workers to get decent pay hikes and pensions. Count me as one who is not impressed with the newly found sense of outrage and morality.
