Canucks to Wal-Mart: Knock It Off

In Canada, it’s a different story when it comes to trying to form a union–at least workers have some belief that the law might stand by them. On Friday, the labor board in Quebec told Wal-Mart it had to stop initimating workers who were trying to organize a store in a suburb of Quebec. Of course, Wal-Mart isn’t going to stand by at let people actually have a union, witness its decision to just close down another store in Quebec where workers actually voted in the union.

In the U.S., well, it’s another story: workers voted 17-1 against having a union at a lube department in a Wal-Mart store. Kind of makes me wonder what the union organizers thought in pushing for an election there. No doubt, Wal-Mart pulled out every anti-union tactic at its disposal–and the UFCW wants the election set aside. But, getting only one vote has to give pause about the work down on the ground.
