The transit workers are still locked in negotiations with the Wal-Mart-like Metropolitan Transit Authority (like Wal-Mart, the MTA is bulging in surpluse but doesn’t think the workers should get a fari shake) and I don’t have any idea insight so…I came across some new information on the campaign to organize FedEx parcel delivery workers.
The Teamsters have set up a website about the campaign, and this week have been handing out leaflets around the country about the company’s practices. And what had slipped past my eyes, which the website reminded of, was the news from a few months ago that a group of former FedEx workers had been granted class action status in a discrimination suit against the company. And here I’ve been picking just on biggies like Wal-Mart for discriminating (in the Beast of Bentonville’s case, that would be there widespread discrimination against women). In this case, African-Americans and Latinos are alleging that FedEx has engaged in racial discrimination.
FedEx is the Wal-Mart of the package delivery industry. Unlike UPS, where workers have a collective bargaining agreement that affords them health care, decent wages and pensions, FedEx pretty much smacks people down with bottom-of-the-barrel benefits. So, keep that in mind when you’re running around trying to figure out how to ship an overnight package.
