I have to get on a plane here soon so just a quick post. The only thing left of the attempt to change immigration policy is the government’s expanded efforts to raid workplace. So, the United Food and Commercial Workers is trying to put some brakes on the practice (from the Associated Press):
A union representing workers at six Swift & Company meatpacking plants sued federal immigration authorities, accusing agents of violating the workers’ rights during raids by roughly handling even those not suspected of crimes. The union, the United Food and Commercial Workers International, and the eight workers named as plaintiffs seek unspecified damages and an order to stop Immigration and Customs Enforcement from conducting what the union says are illegal raids. Immigration officials investigating identity theft arrested 1,297 workers at the plants in December. Of those arrested for being in the country illegally, 649 had been deported as of March 1, according to the most recent numbers available. The suit, filed in federal court in Amarillo, Tex., names as defendants Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Assistant Secretary Julie Myers, the two agencies and unnamed agents who conducted the raids.
Now, I think all these raids are rough and abusive. But, at least, the union is stepping in to try to blunt ICE from acting unchallenged.
