Well, we’re in the midst of the first day at the SEIU convention and a resolution is now on the floor called "Uniting Working People To Change Our Lives". The resolution essentially implements the "Justice For All" program. It’s a long resolution and I don’t have a copy of it electronically. But, an amendment has been advanced by a member of SMART, a group of people who oppose certain aspects of the resolution because they feel the resolution will reduce the influence of rank-and-file. Here is the amendment, which is proposed to replace the entire resolution:
A set of principles, policies and programs that guarantee the right of elected, rank-and-file members to participate at every level of contract negotiations.
Huh? If you want to amend a detailed resolution, respectfully, you have to have something a whole lot more detailed and specific. The above really says very little. It will be voted down resoundingly and doesn’t help your case, FYI.
