Who is the guy who sits in some corporate office trying to think about the newest way to fleece workers? Is that a job title…”head of fleecing workers department”? I’m guessing with Wal-Mart, it might just be one of the actual Waltons, what with their particular greed and apparent enjoyment at discriminating against women and impoverishing workers. Which bring us to the newest scam: payroll cards.
See, this is all about saving companies money. If you don’t give someone a payroll check, it’s cheaper. But, instead, companies are ramming it down workers’ throats, forcing them to use prepaid cards to withdraw paycheck money…and those often have per-use fees attached.
At least one attorney general is not sitting quietly:
The inquiry by Mr. Schneiderman comes as a growing number of companies are abandoning paper paychecks and direct deposit to offer prepaid cards. But consumer lawyers, employees, and state and federal regulators have said that in the vast majority of cases, use of the cards can generate a range of fees — 50 cents for a balance inquiry and $2.25 for an out-of-network A.T.M. Those fees can quickly devour the pay of part-time and low-wage workers.
I wonder if the CEOs of the companies have to use a prepaid card. Right.
