Good news on the turning-back-the Beast campaign–Wal-Mart has dropped its plans to open a store on Staten Island. While the real estate company that said it would develop the site claims it dropped the idea because of the costs to remove toxic chemicals, it’s more likely that Wal-Mart did not want to face the coalition of labor and local residents who were gearing up to oppose the project.
