In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr gave a speech entitled, “The Other America”, in which he said, “It’s much easier to integrate a lunch counter than it is to guarantee a livable income and a good solid job.” This was a theme he repeated time and time again throughout his life because he saw […]

I circle back on the bad deal made by politicians in New York and Virginia with Amazon, honing in specifically on the vicious anti-unionism Amazon pursues—and, despite the hallucinating by the NYC mayor that somehow bringing Amazon to NYC will magically turn it into a fuzzy pro union company, I talk with Dave Mertz of […]

Yesterday was Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, the day that signifies how long it would take for an African American woman to work in 2018 to equal the *2017* pay of a white male counterpart. I noted this day a year ago in Episode 41—and come back to it today in conversation with Valerie Wilson […]

The economic system has been built on racism for generations. The recent tax cuts just made things a lot worse—and I talk about that with Michael Linden, co-author of a path-breaking paper about the hidden racism in the system. I, then, ring up Lori Wallach, the peoples’ trade warrior extraordinaire, for an insider look at […]

Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, just after he had marched on behalf of striking sanitation workers. Today, racism is still a defining characteristic of the economic system, which is what I and Janelle Jones of the Economic Policy Institute discuss in our lead segment. I, then, visit with two progressive Congressional […]

Start by being inspired by Billy Bragg’s “There Is Power In The Union”. Then, listen as I talk to a Nissan worker who is at the center of a critical campaign to win a union at Nissan’s plant in Canton, Mississippi—a two-day vote that will start tomorrow (and we will update the result for our […]

This from The Economist: The most worrying aspect of a Trump presidency, though, is that a person with his poor self-control and flawed temperament would have to make snap decisions on national security—with the world’s most powerful army, navy and air force at his command and nuclear-launch codes at his disposal. Betting markets put the […]

I’ll be marching in the Millions March NYC tomorrow to show solidarity, as organizers say, “For All Those Innocent People of Color Killed By The Misuse of Police Force.” It’s worth remember, in these days when the energy continues to stop the killing of people of color via the barrel of the gun, that another part of racism continues every day: the relentless economic racism leveled by the so-called “free market” against people of color, particularly African-Americans.

Okay, something to like on a 102-degree day: The Obama administration on Tuesday sued Arizona over the state’s strict new immigration law, attempting to wrestle back control over the issue but infuriating Republicans who said the border required more security. The administration argued the Arizona law, which requires state and local police to investigate […]

This past Saturday, we had a great march for immigration rights in New York City–on May 1st, thankfully, and sponsored by the labor movement to boot. Without a doubt, the Arizona racist legislation gave a boost to the turnout on a sun-drenched day. But, here is the point I have made in the past, and […]
